The Russian Geological Society

The Russian Geological Association (Ros Geo) was founded in 1992 on the basis of the Russian Scientific-Technical Association and is a voluntary organization uniting Russian scientists, engineers, lectors, and students, whose activities are related to the development of the geological sciences.

To date, the Russian Geological Association has its 52 branches in the regions and provinces of Russia, as well as the youth geological movement and 5 main sections:  mining geology, hydrogeology, geo-ethics, medical geology and engineering geology. As well the RosGeo has own editorial board and a scientific-technical councils. The society has more than 2500 members in all parts of Russia.

Igor Sergeevich Gramberg, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was the first president. Since 1998 to nowadays Viktor Petrovich Orlov is the society’s current President. In the Executive office of the RosGeo  there are 1 academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 1 candidate member  of the Academy of Sciences, 20 doctor of science (Sc.D) - 20, 10 doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences (Ph.D) -10 and 12 qualified engineers. The main activities of RosGeo:

  • Assistance in the development of geological science and production, the increase of and protection of mineral resources, and development of the geological education
  • Organization and facilitation of conferences, seminars, exhibitions at the federal, regional and international levels;
  • Performing research and surveys, independent reviews of projects and programs on the development of exploration by the request of federal bodies and non-state structures;
  • Publication of the works of scientists, industrialists, and experts on the geological issues; popularization of the profession of a geologist through the publication of fiction and memoirs, publications in magazines and newspapers, and appearances on radio and television.
  • Support for museum activities and the youth geological movement.

The Russian Geological Association publishes magazines such as: “Russia's Mineral Resources '', “Exploration and Protection of the resources '', “Homeland Geology '', and annually conducts All-Russian Geological Forum, geological field and theoretical youth Olympiads and other geological competitions. Children and youth from our country regularly participate in geological field and theoretical Youth Olympiads.

RosGeo every year hands the following awards to their most prominent members:

The Medals “The Geologist Igor Granberg”,  the Merit Medal of A.E. Fersman and the badge “ The geological unit of Russia”, certificates and the badge of the RosGeo itself. In June 2006, the former President of Mongolian Geological Association, ex parlment member and ex minister of the Environment and the green development S. Oyun was awarded a Recognition Certificate from RosGeo.
