Geological Society of Japan (JGS)

The GSM concluded the Cooperation Agreement with the JGS in October 2009, which was signed by the former President of the MGA, Oyun S. and the President of the JGS, Sumio Miyashita.

The signing ceremony, October 2009.

Mongolian geologists were invited by the JGS in June 2013 and participated in the International Mineral Geological Conference in Tokyo. They visited the Hishikari Gold Mine and were introduced to the metamorphic rocks distribution on the Kyushu Island and their features, geology of Mount Aso, and its geothermal systems.

The Geological Society of Japan (JGS) was established in 1893 to promote science, increase geological research, and distribute the research data.

The association currently has over 4300 members including scientists, teachers and engineers working in the field of geology and mineral resources with 7 branch offices in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, Sikoku and Nishinihon and 14 research groups that include:

  • Petrology
  • Stratigraphy
  • Quaternary geology
  • Marine geology
  • Geological information
  • Structural geology
  • Paleontology
  • Environmental geology
  • Sedimentology
  • Modern geology
  • Geological Engineering
  • Volcano study
  • Regional geology
  • Perennial environmental change.

The Journal of the Geological Society of Japan is a monthly journal of the JGS. The journal publishes geological research articles in Japanese and English. For more than 125 years now since its establishment, the magazine has published a total of 1363 numbers and 15 volumes. The editorial board of the magazine has recently been updated to provide reliable and high-quality publications, and all articles published since 1893 have been posted online as study materials to be accessible from anywhere in the world. The JGS also publishes a monthly newspaper. Japan Association of Quaternary Research, Japanese Association of Mineralogists, Petrologists and Economic Geologists, Paleontological Society of Japan, Society of Resource Geology all collaborate with JSG to publish the quarterly scientific magazine “Island Arc”.

The Japanese Geological Society awards the following awards to successful scholars and geologists:

  • Japanese Geological Society Prize – is presented to members of the Society who have made excellent contributions to the development of the geological science.
  • The Geological Society of Japan International Prize – is presented to members or non-members of the Society who have made innovative contributions in geology, as well as distinguished achievements in developing geology of Japan through studies of the Japanese Islands and the adjacent areas and/or cooperative researches with Japanese geologists.
  • “Island Arc” Award – is presented to the author(s) of excellent papers published in the journal “Island Arc” that have made significant, internationally recognized contributions in geology. The award is presented to all co-authors regardless of the membership of the Society.

  • Sakuyama Masanori Award – is awarded to young researchers (up to the age of 37) who have been internationally recognized for their work in petrology and volcanology.
  • Koto Bunjiro Award – is awarded to the members who have made significant inventions and scientific discoveries.
  • Best Paper Award
  • Young Scientist Award
  • Contribution Prize – is awarded to the geologist who has been working productively in the field of geology for many years.
